January 2017

Cub Scouts
Digging in the Past

Our Adventure for January was called Digging in the Past. Isaac has been looking forward to starting this since we started the wolves’ book last June. We studied about dinosaurs, got to make fossils, and a Dino dig. Then they created their own. They first drew them out, then created them out of recycled materials, paper maché, and paint. They presented them along with a short description at the pack meeting. Alex even made up one that we formed from a balloon and some paper cut out shapes.
Our Assistant Den Leader is now our new Cubmaster. Her son, Brady, is in class with the twins, they live down the street from us, and we take him to Awana’s every Wednesday. His birthday is even exactly two weeks before the twins, so we call him the missing triplet. She is also a NOVA leader and we studied about and made a volcano at the beginning of the month.

PETS

The chickens are doing really well and gave us 56 eggs in January. We think that is great considering they do not have a heat source in the coop.

At the end of December, we started feeding a stray that came onto our property. She eventually warmed up to us and we have now claimed her. We named her Annie (or Maple depending on who you ask) and she’s been wonderful. She great with the kids, loves her crate and even kills vermin. She still gets a little skittish but we’re still learning about her.

Awana’s
Completing Book One

The boys have been working very hard on their verses, have earned several jewels each and have been able to attend a couple of the ice cream parties. They love listening to the CD in the car on the way there or even home from school. They have a Grand Prix which is like the Pinewood Derby for Scouts, but won’t be able to race because of the timing of our trip in February. They understand though. I will make one of the cars for Alex so he can participate in the sibling level of the District Pinewood Derby, and I may do the other for myself for the parent level. Isaac has completed the book and is now in the review phase. They both seem to not just be able to remember the stories and verses, but really understand them too.

School
Three Snow Days

We have already used three snow days in January. The first two were within days of them being back to school from winter break. We got 8” by the time it stopped. We did our Northern Cardio every day, sometimes twice in one day and enjoyed it as much as we could while we had it.

Progress Reports and Report cards have both been wonderful. Praise God, they have not missed any days due to illness.

Fun
The Shriner’s Circus

We were given tickets again this year to go to the Shriner’s Circus from one of Joey’s brothers at the lodge. We sat at the top and was able to see very well, though Alex wasn’t fond of the heights.

During  intermission, we went to the floor to look around and saw another brother who gave the boys all a ticket to ride the elephant. The twins were a little nervous but Alex wasn’t at all (I was). He sat great between them both and they all loved it.
